Thanks to Rylie for our Media Monday on a Thursday… and a great jump start to an Action Plan.
We also got to jump in to our grade 6/7 classes for a quick look at some numbers. Let’s look at what we can do with these!
We continued reading today The Inconvenient Indian. Those of you that ducked out can grab your copy and read up into page 68- “Thank goodness there are Legal Indians,” is our end point.
We began our read of The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King. We’re investigating his definitions, and our own biases, of Dead Indians, Live Indians, and Legal Indians.
Big thanks to Stephanie for her Media Monday looking at coverage of the laws surrounding conversion therapy.
We also got a breakdown from Maggie on this article on “The White Saviourism Industrial Complex”
We did a bit of a breakdown on next step for The Indian Act, according to Bob Joseph, author of 21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act.
We spent time on your Action Projects- at least those of you that got ideas down. Let’s move forward on these!
Thanks to everyone that presented their piece on The Indian Act today- looking at the entire chronology felt overwhelming. Be sure to respond through myBlueprint.
Show me where you’re at with your Action Projects!

Thanks to all those folks that shared either complete work or en route work today- we’ll complete it tomorrow!
Be thinking about the historical narrative of the Indian Act- have we seen a turning point? Can you categorize these events? What changes have we seen? How did those changes occur? Where do they stem from?
How do we combat discrimination when it is legally codified?
If they’re late, mark them late. If EEEEEEEEVERYONE is on time, they get a point under the pancakes heading. If they get 5 days in a row with everyone on time, I make pancakes. Delicious, delicious pancakes.
Yesterday we spoke to the need of consultation and the roles of advocates vs allies and we used the term ‘white saviourism’. Get someone to volunteer to dig apart the article that I’ve provided and present findings on Friday. If nobody volunteers, tell Riley that its their turn and that I rolled for it.
Can you reiterate their revised timeline for the next few days.
THURSDAY – Indian Act project presentations
FRIDAY – Hannah’s Media presentation and White Saviourism article
MONDAY – Laird’s Media presentation
NEXT THURSDAY – Benji Media presentation
After that, they’ve got the full class to pull together finishing touches on their project. Due on Thursday. Many of them found a lot of help in the library with Mr Ames. They may be reluctant to that, but if you see people floundering, give them a push in that direction.
We dug into the need of advocates in our Action Projects. Do these causes always want our voices? What is our responsibility in consultation? Someone should read an article!
The rest of the time was spent researching. Many of you checked in with Mr Ames and that time was VERY well spent!
Get this up on the Slides, because it is duuuuuuuuue Thursday!
We began by counting cars and their idling minutes!
Jade and Maggie will speak with Mr Bonner about bus stuff, and I’ll look at questions for grade 6 and 7s to assess their familiarity with buses.
Saps took us through the power (or lack therof) of status cars
The rest of your time was spent working on your The Indian Act Said What? Projects
